Biographical/Historical note

In 1949, the School of Economics and Politics and the School of Humanistic Studies merged to form a new School: the School of Historical Studies. This action was the result of Institute Director J. Robert Oppenheimer's assessment, beginning with his appointment in 1947, of academic excellence and intellectual primacy across the Schools of the Institute. His conclusion was that strengths within the two smallest of the three Schools, and of the Institute overall, would be enhanced through consolidation. Practical matters also entered into the decision, including the loss of Faculty representation in economics.

Though the School of Historical Studies would inherit its core academic fields as well as its Faculty from the two earlier Schools, the name of the School expressed a newly defined vision and intention to create an academic center that would attract and support visiting scholars who shared what Oppenheimer identified as an essential "unifying and invigorating element of work in history and the humanities" 1 ― namely, the historical method.

On the Faculty of the new School, Edward Mead Earle, in the field of modern history, represented the School of Economics and Politics. Western European classical civilization and art history, areas of study which had thrived in the School of Humanistic Studies, were represented on the new School's active Faculty by Harold F. Cherniss (Greek philosophy), Benjamin D. Meritt (Greek epigraphy), Erwin Panofsky (art history), and Homer A. Thompson (Greek archaeology). (Hetty Goldman, the archaeologist who was the Institute’s first female Faculty member, retired prior to the merger of the Schools, but was emeritus in the School of Historical Studies until her death in 1972.) Over the years, the School would add fields not previously in the Faculty's purview. For example, in 1951, the gap between ancient and modern history was bridged with the appointment of medieval European historian Ernst Kantorowicz. In 1970, modern philosopher Morton White joined the Faculty. Both the earliest and these later added areas of study have been among the mainstays of the School of Historical Studies. Since the School's founding, the number of Faculty has averaged about seven per academic year, with a brief high of twelve in the early 1970s, and, more than once, a low of six.

Though the School's strengths have often rested in subject areas with an essentially Western European perspective, in particular those of the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome, core fields have reached beyond these boundaries from the beginning. Asian studies has an especially long history at the Institute with the purchase of the Gest Oriental Library, initiated in 1936 by IAS Director Abraham Flexner. The acquisition provided a vital and rich resource, and was ultimately made more accessible under the later stewardship of Princeton University. Faculty in Asian studies, however, would be realized only after three successive short-term appointments beginning with Patricia Ebrey in 1998. These forays into the field were well received and resulted in the 2003 permanent appointment of Nicola Di Cosmo. Near Eastern studies, and the closely allied field of Islamic studies, also arrived early in the intellectual life of the Institute with the 1936 Faculty appointment of archaeologist Ernst Herzfeld. Though permanent representation in this area lapsed for a time, later appointments of Oleg Grabar (1990) and Patricia Crone (1997) picked up this thread.

The School has also found inventive ways to supplement its small permanent faculty through shorter term appointments. The legacy of diplomat and historian George Kennan, who served on the Faculty from 1956 until his death in 2005, and the Institute’s continued support of modern political history, is furthered by the Kennan Chair, established in 1995. This is a regular faculty position, limited to two to five years, focusing on understanding of the contemporary world. Jack Matlock was the first to hold this position, beginning in 1996.

Other disciplines have been incorporated into the work of the School by means often reflecting the School's creative approach to balancing available resources with a commitment to supporting excellence and breadth of scholarship. One example is the history of science. In 1945, historian of science Otto Neugebauer began his relationship as a visiting scholar, which would continue until his death in 1990. Though rarely done at the Institute, he was granted an affiliation with multiple Schools ― Historical Studies and Mathematics, and, later, Natural Sciences. In 1951, IAS Trustee Lessing J. Rosenwald acquired the Herbert M. Evans collection of rare books in the history of science that included "numerous first editions of important scientific works in mathematics, astronomy, physics and the life sciences." 2 Rosenwald gave this collection to the Institute thereby providing a further attraction to scholars in the field. Among those scholars was Alexandre Koyré, a philosopher and historian of science, who was to have stays at the Institute spanning nearly ten years (1955-1964). Finally, in 1964, historian of science Marshall Clagett was appointed to the Faculty, and the field continues to be pursued in various ways by Faculty, such as Heinrich von Staden (appointed in 1998), as well as visiting scholars.

In addition to the work of its Faculty, like the Institute’s other Schools, the School of Historical Studies is chiefly occupied with supporting visiting scholars. True to the School's particular mandate, a wide range of scholars working in the historical method have been part of its intellectual community. Most work within the very broad net cast by the interests of the Faculty. Many, however, have extended that scope into fields such as literature and music studies. When established in 1949, scholars classed as Members numbered in the high teens. Into the 1960s, this group slowly edged into the low to mid-twenties, and later that decade numbered in the thirties. By the early 1970s and into the present, totals in any given academic year have most commonly been in the low to mid-forties, with a high during that time of fifty-two and a low of thirty-six.

However, the total number of scholars is increased by other classes of affiliation, the most numerically significant of them being Visitors, a category adopted by the School in the early 1970s. Since then, Visitors have averaged roughly seven per academic year. In addition, there have been various categories of Research Assistants and/or Associates. Until the early 1990s, the School also provided occasional support in the categories of "Member with Long-Term Appointment" and "Permanent Members." An example of the latter was art historian Kurt Weitzmann. Though these classes of membership no longer exist, it is still School practice to consider providing support to scholars for return visits― sometimes over many years.

In keeping with the Institute's mission, the School of Historical Studies allows scholars complete independence while also providing forums for scholarly exchange. As an example, the School retained the collaboration established by Erwin Panofsky, originally of the School of Humanistic Studies, to host and organize seminars in conjunction with Princeton University's Department of Art and Archaeology. This continues into the present, and has included the 2009-2010 series of seven lectures entitled "Art and Its Audiences” spearheaded for the School by art historian Yves-Alain Bois.

Within the School itself, colloquia, seminars, and workshops are a regular part of the academic terms, with scholars meeting both collectively and in smaller interest groups. Weekly School-wide colloquia began in collaboration with the School of Social Science, then divided into meetings of the separate Schools in the 1980s. Examples of smaller gatherings have included the Empire Group Seminar and the Medieval Table Lunchtime Colloquium.

The School's offices are located in Fuld Hall (1939) and West Building (1972). The work of scholars is also supported by the Historical Studies-Social Science Library, a campus architectural highlight since its completion in 1964. (When conceived and designed by Wallace K. Harrison, the School of Social Science did not yet exist, so the building was inaugurated as the "Library of Historical Studies.") The resources of the HS-SS Library are further enhanced by a unique set of paper squeezes housed in Building B. These impressions of ancient Greek stone inscriptions total 25,000 making it one of the largest collections of its kind in the world. The collection's success can be traced to the efforts of one of the earliest Faculty, Benjamin D. Meritt, as well as the continued interest and generosity of later contributors, including Christian Habicht.

Members, Faculty, Visitors: 1936-1992   2.0 linear feet

Scope and Contents note

The bulk of the Members, Faculty, Visitors: 1936-1992 series of the School of Historical Studies records dates to the 1950's and 1960's. The contents chiefly pertain to successful applicants for membership to the School of Historical Studies, though a few Faculty (e.g., Stewart, Warren) and Visitors are also represented. The files are in alphabetical order, but the A-L files are missing. The remainder of the letters of the alphabet are fully represented, if not all the applicants in this latter part of the alphabet. (N.B.-The first three files--Mack-Smith through MacMullen--were transferred from the Schools of Economics and Politics /Humanistic Studies records. It should not, therefore, be inferred that there is full representation for the early part of the "M" files). Documentation in the files includes membership application forms, letters of inquiry, letters of recommendation, and other supporting materials related to applications and scholarly work.

2016.0003 - Member and Visitor Files 1954-2011   7.0 linear feet

Scope and Contents note

The Accession 2016.0003 series of the School of Historical Studies records are files of Members and Visitors (one Assistant) spanning the years 1954-2011 with the bulk of the material dating from 1970-1990. Dates for each file are intended to correspond to the academic year during which that scholar was affiliated with the Institute and not the dates of the folder contents. Importantly, the dates as shown do not always accurately reflect the dates of affiliation. The contents of this series pertain to successful applicants to the School of Historical Studies. The files are in alphabetical order with Members in the first seven boxes, and Visitors/Assistants in the eighth box. Documentation in the files includes membership application forms, letters of inquiry, letters of recommendation, and other supporting materials related to applications and scholarly work, and also often include Polaroid portrait photographs of individual scholars that were used in a public display of scholars affiliated with the School during that academic year.

Arrangement note

If a scholar was both a Member and a Visitor, that person's folder is filed in the Member boxes (1-7).
